Week 10: Vinyl plank flooring

This week was another big week at our rental house. I just about finished installing all the flooring in the entire house. With the new paint and the new vinyl plank flooring it’s really starting to feel more like a house and less like a construction zone. We have never installed vinyl plank flooring in any of our houses, but this is great stuff, especially for a rental property. It’s so easy to install, and it’s supposed to withstand anything. And it’s way cheaper than hardwood, but looks much nicer than laminate.

We used Goodfellow vinyl plank flooring in the Dubai color for the entire house, that we purchased through our local hardware store. I think it’s the perfect medium brown flooring, that’s not too orange but not too grey.

We ended up with two boxes of flooring that were a slightly different tone than the rest (those three strips on the very left in the kitchen). I was able to use one box that will go under the the cabinets in the kitchen, but the rest I won’t use. With flooring, it’s best to open many boxes at a time to make sure that you mix up different colors and patterns. I’ll have to return the one box because I just can’t bring myself to mix it in with the other pieces.

Kitchen cabinets

In other news, Tony has started building the kitchen cabinets in our shop at home. We also ordered the doors and gables for the kitchen, and those should come in about two weeks. I’m so excited about the kitchen, that will be the best room in the house. These are the doors we ordered (a simple shaker door) in a medium grey color.

NEXT WEEK

I have a few spots to finish with the flooring, but that shouldn’t take more than an hour or two. I’ll also start installing the trim, putting the closet doors back on, install some custom closet shelving, maybe caulk and paint the trim and interior doors, start cleaning, finish the exterior, go to the dump…. there’s a long list.  It would be really nice to get this project wrapped up within the next four weeks. Do you think we can do it?

Floors look great Jess! I have started using vinyl plank in most of my rental rehabs. Instead of click, I like the glue down products, similar to LVT flooring, because you can install it on a releasable glue. That way when a tenant damages it, (and they will…), you can easily pull up the damaged piece and slap down a new one.

That is a really good tip! We might have to do that for the next one
