Week 5 Update: Some vinyl flooring, more demo, and a bit of trim painting

I feel like we didn’t get a lot done at the house last week and we seem to be falling a bit behind on the timeline. I felt just a smidge discouraged this week about how much work we have left to do and how fast the time is going. Last week I mentioned that we were waiting for the electrician before we could move on with a few other things. He did not have time this week, so that will now be pushed back to next week. A few things we did do this week though were some more demo in the kitchen, demo in the living room, installing a bit of vinyl plank flooring, and painting trim at home.

More demo in the kitchen

Our new kitchen design will have the sink under the window rather than the current spot in the corner. But that means that Tony will need to reroute the plumbing to the back wall. And since it’s an exterior wall we don’t really want the plumbing in the wall, we’d rather not jack hammer the concrete to put the plumbing in the floor, so that meant our last option was to build out the wall a few inches and put the plumbing in the false wall. So then we decided to rip out all the drywall in the kitchen. And then since the electrician needs to get in the wall we decided not to build out the new wall and just leave it like this. I thought we were pretty much done demo, but now it’s just even messier.

More demo in the living room

We also realized that there was drywall under all that paneling in the living room, so I decided to remove it all rather than paint it. I still need to remove the wallpaper in the kitchen and patch the wall and ceiling, once the electrician is done and I can finish taking down the rest of the wall. A lot of things are waiting on the electrical work.

A little bit of vinyl plank flooring

One positive last week was that I chose and bought all the flooring for the house! I started laying the vinyl plank flooring in the green bedroom, but hit a roadblock at the door. The proper way to install flooring is to lay it under the door jambs, and that means that sometimes you have to cut the bottom of the doorjambs. The door jambs in this house are metal and I wasn’t able to cut them, so I just quit.

I started to lay the flooring in the laundry room too. The concrete is rough where the plumbers did their work, so I need to smooth that out before continuing.

Some trim painting

One thing I did accomplish this week that I feel good about was painting all the trim. I used my paint sprayer and in two hours I did two coats of paint on 50 pieces of trim. I highly recommend painting trim before you install it!

NEXT WEEK

Next week for sure the electrician is coming and then hopefully we can get back on track with our timeline.
