Week 3: Interior wall removal between the kitchen and living room

This week was a very exciting week at the rental house! The major things we accomplished this week was the interior wall removal between the kitchen and living room, having the kitchen window replaced, and finishing up most of the demolition in the house.

Interior wall removal

We were pretty sure the interior wall between the living room was not a load bearing wall. Don’t worry though, we didn’t just start ripping and tearing without making totally sure. We first had our contractor put a beam in the ceiling to support the roof. It’s nicely tucked up in the attic so the ceiling will look seamless.

Kitchen window

We also had our contractors replace the window in the kitchen. I know it’s not usual to close in a very large window and at first I thought it was a silly idea. But it actually makes a lot of sense in this house. Now that the interior wall is down, there is no logical place for the fridge to go. With a smaller window we can extend the cabinets and put the fridge in with the cabinets. It will make a much nicer layout in the kitchen. Also the window that was there was old and it didn’t open, so it’s also really nice to get a breeze going through the house.

Finishing off the demo

There were a few other things I ripped out of the house, including the medicine cabinet in the bathroom…

NEXT WEEK

Next week I’m going to start cleaning so I can get ready for painting. The house smells a bit old and musty, so I’d like to wash down all the walls with bleach. I also would like Tony to go to the house and do some electrical for me and help me take down the kitchen cabinets. Other than that I also need to start buying materials and nailing down my color choices.
