DIY Projects The Build

Master Bedroom Makeover Reveal

For the last seven weeks I’ve been a guest participant in the One Room Challenge. I have been working on our master bedroom to create a colorful and fun, yet still calm and cohesive space. And as always, we were on a small budget, so this room makeover included lots of DIY projects and using what I already had.

The Plan

As a reminder, here is what it looked like seven weeks ago.

And on the to-do list:

  • Finish installing some remaining pieces of trim
  • Caulk, fill nails holes, and do two coats of paint on the trim and doors
  • Install one last pocket door hardware
  • Create an inexpensive accent wall
  • Makeover some yard sale bedside tables
  • Upholster the bed
  • Add some art to the walls
  • Develop a better system to reduce clutter

The Paint

The first week I finished installing the trim and painting two coats of semi-gloss trim paint. The wall color is Benjamin Moore Grey Owl in an eggshell finish, and the trim paint color is Chantilly Lace in semi-gloss.

Polka Dot Accent Wall

I created a polka dot accent wall using inexpensive vinyl dots. This is a quick an easy way to create an accent wall, and it can easily be removed if I get tired of it.

Reupholster the Bed

I also reupholstered the bed using navy blue herringbone fabric to fit in with the green, blue and maroon color scheme. For the bedding I decided to go with white sheets, a blue coverlet, and colorful patterned pillows.

Bedside Tables

I refinished a pair of end tables that I found at a yard sale using a pale green mix of General Finishes milk paint.

Picture Frame Art

For the art above my dresser, I bought four matching white picture frames from IKEA. I put in a few pieces of art that I already had, including a picture I re-purposed from the tissue paper canvases I made a couple years ago. For the rest of the art, I printed out some colorful patterned prints that matched the colors of the decorative cushion covers.

Above Tony’s dresser I put some colorful fabric samples in the same matching IKEA frames. Sometimes all you need are some splashes of color, and these colors make me happy.

I also spray painted a gold mirror and hung it on the last bare wall.

Reduce Clutter

And as for reducing clutter…well, that’s an on-going battle. Right now everything that was on top of the dressers and all over the floor is in a laundry basket in the closet. I will organize that someday.

Master Bedroom Makeover Final Touches

One of the best things I did to make this room feel cozy and warm was bring in an area rug. I took the one we already had from the girls room, and switched theirs out with another one we had in the basement. I found a throw blanket that had all the colors that I was working with. There are quite a few different colors in this bedroom, but as long as there’s at least three instances of each color I feel it is all cohesive. I also bought a few cut flowers from a local flower shop. I realized flower arranging is not my skill, but I still love how they look in the bedroom

Now our bedroom is clean and neat, and colorful. I would say I achieved my goal of creating a finished space, that isn’t bland and boring anymore! I’d love to know your thoughts on this master bedroom makeover. What is your favorite part of this room?

A huge thanks to General Finishes for sending me paint for the bedside tables, as well as ForeverStudio for sending me more dots to finish the accent wall.

I love how the bed turned out. The herringbone fabric looks great. Altogether, it’s such a personal, thrifty space. I love seeing you use–and reuse–so many pieces.
