How To Make Quilted Christmas Stockings From Baby Clothes: Part 1

Remember as part of my Christmas home tour I showed you a sneak peak of the quilted Christmas stockings I made for the girls? Today I’m going to show you how! Yes I know it’s after Christmas, but this is a great winter project that you can do now and be all prepared for next Christmas.

Quilted Christmas stockings from baby girl dresses. Baby clothes upcycled into Christmas stockings

I’ve had baby clothes sitting in a box for years, not really knowing what to do with them, but I couldn’t quite bring myself to get rid of them. I thought it would be really special if I could pull handmade stockings made from the kids’ baby clothes every year at Christmas. It would be a reminder of some of my favorite clothes they wore when they were babies. So just before Christmas I made a pair of coordinating stockings from baby girl dresses.  I will be showing you two different patterns, one with simple stripes, and one with squares.

In this post I’m going to show you how to make the front and back pieces for two different patterns. Next week I’ll show you how to put the pieces together, add the lining, and make the cuff.

Simple Stripe Quilted Christmas Stocking

Step 1: Find Fabric for the Quilted Stockings

I chose five baby girl dresses and a crib skirt that all had matching shades of pink, purple and white. I also used a soft blanket for the inside lining.

Step 2: Cut out stocking template

If you want to make these for yourself, you can download my free stocking template. Sign up for email below and it will be sent to your inbox.

Step 3: Cut the Clothes Into Strips

Using a rotary cutter, a rotary cutter, and a ruler, I cut the fabric into 3 inch wide strips.

Step 4: Cut Batting

Using the template, cut out two pieces of quilt batting, one for the front of the stocking, and one for the back. You can cut this a little bigger than the template and fairly rough, because you’ll be trimming it down to the right size later.

Step 5: Start Quilting

For the simple stripe stocking, put two fabric strips right side together. Pin them directly to the batting. Sew these strips directly to the batting, with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Press the seam open on the right side.

Continue sewing fabric strips in this way until the entire piece of batting is covered. Make sure the pieces are always right sides together, so when you press open the seams the raw edges are hidden.

Step 6: Trim the edges

Next trim around the edges of your batting to make the front piece of the stocking the same size as the template. I also created a patchwork quilted piece for the back of the stocking. I used up scraps to create a random pattern, but I quilted the pieces directly to the batting in the same way that I did the front piece.

Square Quilted Christmas Stocking

Step 1: Sew The Strips Together

With the 3 inch strips that are left over from the simple strip Christmas stocking, determine your color pattern and sew all the strips together. Sew them right sides together with 1/4 inch seam allowance.

On the reverse, iron the seams open.

Step 2: Cut strips of squares

Using a ruler, rotary cutter, and rotary cutter, cut these into 3 inch wide strips so each strips is made up of a series of squares.

Step 3: Finish the same as the simple stripe stocking

The rest of this stocking pattern is the same as above. Cut two pieces of the batting, then sew the strips made up of small squares directly on the batting. Always right sides together, then iron flat. Trim around the edges to the size of the template. Make a patchwork pattern with scraps for the back of the stocking.

Next week I’ll show you how to make the cuff, and sew all the pieces together to make one-of-a-kind quilted Christmas stockings!
