Pine cabin siding, interior trim, and kitchen cabinet doors

I can’t believe how fast time has been going. It felt like I posted an update just yesterday, but it turns out it’s been over three weeks! The last update I posted I had just about finished the interior walls, made a good start on the exterior siding, and we started building the front porch. Over the last three weeks I completely finished the interior walls, we made more progress on the pine cabin siding, as well as the front porch. I also caulked all the joints in the wood ceiling and did another coat of paint, and Tony installed some of the kitchen cabinet doors.

Whitewashed pine ceiling

We originally did a light coat of whitewash on the pine ceiling, but we were never quite happy with how it looked. After we installed the pine ceiling, all the boards shrunk a little after drying out. Then after we painted it, the cracks between the boards were very noticeable. So I decided to caulk all the joints and then give the ceiling another coat of paint. That was a fairly big job, but it looks so much better now.

Interior trim

For the interior trim, we used some of the leftover pine wall paneling and Tony ripped it down to three inches wide using his table saw. I painted it using some white trim paint I already had, and installed it on all the windows. I still have to fill the nail holes, caulk the joints, and do a final coat of paint on the trim and windows, but the interior trim is getting very close to being complete.

Kitchen cabinets Doors

We bought the kitchen cabinets from Home Depot, but then ordered custom thermofoil doors from Richelieu. The doors came in and Tony installed them on the lower cabinets. We haven’t been able to install the upper cabinets yet because they sent us the wrong color of crown moulding (yes our cabin kitchen will have crown moulding!). The door color is celadon green, and I”ll also be painting the bathroom door the same color, as soon as stores are open and I can get a custom color paint match.

Cabin pine siding

For the exterior, we continue to install the cabin pine siding. We decided to buy some scaffolding because it was too difficult to install off a ladder, which also made painting the ceiling a little easier. The front porch is really starting to take shape after we installed the rafters and strapping. We ordered the tin, and will install that after we finish the siding on the front of the cabin.

NEXT STEPS

We are going to work on installing the soffit, and then painting the soffit and fascia. And then there’s more siding to work on. Tony has also started building the ladder. We are really, really hoping to have the cabin finished by the end of June. That gives us just about four weeks to get our ever shortening list finished.

The second coat on ceiling looks so good! I love the contrast with the wooden beams.
